The history in Madison area is well established. In 1855, The Kent County Agricultural Society purchased 40 acres to be utilized as fair grounds. Known as Madison Square, it became the first outlying shopping center and emerged as a full-fledged neighborhood shopping area in the mid-1880s due to a boom in home building. The Square’s atmosphere boasted many grocery stores, barbershop, bakery, shoe repair, dry good stores, and drug store.
Today, Madison area features a lot of coffee houses, bars, and restaurants.
