I mean who doesn’t love tacos?! Not only are tacos a way of life but also a very controversial subject around here. Because who, in Grand Rapids, has the best tacos?

Let’s start with the ever-popular choice: Donkey Taqueria on Wealthy St. Housed in a renovated gas station from the 1920s, Donkey offers authentic Mexican food with an always evolving cocktail menu, led by head bartender Justin Whitman. My go-to taco here is easily the Bruselas – crispy fried Brussel sprouts, corn, bacon, jalapeño mayo and salsa verde all wrapped in a soft corn tortilla. Nothing beats washing this taco down with one of Justin’s many cocktail features while people watching on their sunny patio.

A bit closer to downtown, and within walking distance to many other bars & restaurants, sits Luna GR. Offering a bit more of a Latin influence, Luna focuses on simple food with flavors that speak for themselves. Make sure you start any meal here with the flight of assorted salsa and house-made chips. In true South American fashion, be sure to order a Fernet & Coke to quench your thirst.

Looking for a quick lunch with Mexican authenticity? Then Taqueria San Jose is a must! Operating out of an old school drive-in, San Jose quickly makes up for its lack of indoor seating with an Al Pastor taco I could eat daily. If you’re looking for something special, be sure to get there early to try and snag one of Grandma’s Gorditas! Trust me, these things will go quickly. Grab an ice-cold Jarritos while you wait for your tacos and enjoy the additional outdoor seating.

The best thing about these taquerias is that they offer fast, friendly service and approachable menus. While each has its own unique spin on flavors and execution, all offer amazing food and drink with fun, inviting environments to take a date or feed the kids.

Alright, now I’m hungry!
