Homeownership is a significant milestone in many people's lives, symbolizing stability, security, and a place to call your own. However, being a homeowner also comes with responsibilities, expenses, and occasional challenges. It can be a bit overwhelming to go from renting or living with family where when issues arose with the home, it was not your responsibility to deal with or fix them. However, there are many amazing resources offered for residents of Kent County that help negate some of the stress that comes with maintaining a home you own.
Home Repair Services
- The City of Grand Rapids recognizes the importance of maintaining safe and well-maintained homes. The Home Repair Services (HRS) program offers free and low-cost repairs to eligible homeowners. From addressing minor plumbing issues and electrical repairs to ensuring accessibility modifications for elderly or disabled individuals, HRS provides invaluable assistance to those in need. They also host a fix-it school every Saturday, where they offer free hands-on classes on topics from basic electrical to cabinet installation. You can find a calendar of all events hosted by HRS here.
- Another amazing service provided by home repair services is their Remodeling Together Program. This is available to all Kent County Residents, regardless of income. The Remodeling Together program is made up of a team of individuals who help folks do DIY kitchen renovations. They offer classes that cover all topics related to kitchen renovations, and then one of their coaches works by your side to actually complete all tasks involved. This is an incredible resource and a wonderful way for folks to put some sweat equity into their homes. Get more information about the Remodeling Together program.
- Home Repair Services also offers free home maintenance checkups for homeowners. This is essentially a free post-purchase home inspection, which is an amazing way to stay up to speed on the condition of your home. Home inspections can be costly, so having one done for free by a professional is something to take advantage of. The only requirement is that the homeowner attends the home maintenance checkup. This service helps folks understand what work may need to be done, and then be able to prioritize and save accordingly. Get more information or schedule a home maintenance checkup.
DTE Home Energy Check-up
- DTE offers free in-home energy checkups for anyone living in a single-family home, duplex, or condo. This energy check-up checks for anything that could improve your energy efficiency, such as checking windows and doors as well as ventilation systems. I am a huge believer that knowledge is power, and I especially think this about your home. If you know where your home uses and loses the most energy, you can make changes accordingly to increase efficiency. Other than providing you with important information about your home, they will also provide you with free energy-efficient products such as energy star certified light bulbs, water heater pipe wraps, energy-efficient shower heads, and faucet aerators. Owning a home is something to be proud of. Homeownership not only is an incredible way to invest in your future and build your net worth, but it also is a way to invest back into your community. Homeownership is something that should feel like an honor and a great privilege, not a burden and large unmanageable responsibility. My hope is that sharing these resources allows people to feel empowered about owning their own homes and that they continue to make investments in their homes and lives.
