When someone finds out that I’m from the south (North Carolina, to be exact) they usually ask me two things:

1. How do you feel about winter?

2. Have you been to Traverse City?

I can finally say, “YES!” to question 2. (I plead the fifth on question 1…) Recently, my fiancé and I took a weekend excursion to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival. A quick 2.5 drive got us to our hotel where we quickly unloaded and headed out to Mission Point. We stopped by Bowers Harbor Vineyard for a tasting and delicious Cidermosa. (Yes, it was amazing!!) We also took a pitstop at the lighthouse and then grabbed dinner at North Peak Brewing. After one afternoon/evening in TC, I was hooked!

Saturday we spent most of the day at the Traverse City State Hospital. You know, the old insane asylum turned office complex and retail center. It. Was. AWESOME! I’m a big fan of architecture (hello, Grand Rapids!) so this was an absolute dream! Not to mention, my favorite cider, Cinnamon Girl, is made right there on the grounds at Left Foot Charley! So after lunch at Spanglish, drinks at LFC, and far too much shopping, we headed to the Cherry Festival to catch the airshow. And we were NOT disappointed!

Sure, it was 95 degrees but, remember, I’m from the South so it got me feeling nostalgic! The rest of the day was a blur of TaprootThe Little Fleet and ice cream. We really packed a lot in but the weekend wasn’t over yet.

On Sunday we decided to explore EVEN more and took a quick trip to Torch Lake and Bellair (Bee Well AND Shorts?! Yes, please!) where we walked around, dipped our feet in the water and decided we were never coming home! That didn’t last long but it was a fun daydream.

I’m so glad I listened to everyone’s advice, including my fiancé, and planned a trip to Traverse City! Living in Grand Rapids gives us access to so many wonderful new places to explore and I am thrilled that we have all this opportunity!
